Studio Tsunagaru was opened in 2017. Peter needed a place to create art, make a mess and not have to clean up each day. His wife, Diane, was very pleased to not have wood being sawed on their kitchen table where they lived. The Japanese word, Tsunagaru means connection. Studio Tsunagaru continues to provide a space for artists to create and spend time collaborating together. We have used the studio for one art residency in 2018. Two international artists stayed for a month, experienced Japanese culture, met many new friends and responded to their experience by creating a joint exhibition at the end of their time. Each day was filled with so many fun activities with others. We joked at the end of their stay that the exhibition should have been entitled, “What We Would Have Exhibited if We Had More Time to Create!” We hope to have more residencies like this. Creating art is something we value, and we also value the relationships that were created through this residency. One of the beautiful things about Studio Tsunagaru is that the front doors open right out into the street. As people walk by, they always seem curious as to what is being created. A studio without walls invites questions, shares the creative experience and brings connection!

スタジオTsunagaruは2017年にオープンしました。ピーターは、創作活動をし、散らかしても毎日掃除をしなくてもいい場所を必要としていました。この場所がオープンした時、妻のダイアンは、もう自分たちが住んでいるキッチンテーブルの上で木材を散らかすことがないことをとても喜んでいました。「Tsunagaru」という言葉は、日本語の「つながり」を意味します。スタジオTsunagaruは、アーティストが創作活動を行い、共同作業をするためのスペースを提供し続けています。2018年には、スタジオを1件のアート・レジデンシー（アーティストが一定期間ある土地に滞在し、作品制作やリサーチ活動を行うこと）に使用しました。2人の国際的なアーティストが1ヶ月間滞在し、日本の文化を体験しながら多くの新しい友人と出会い、滞在期間の終わりには共同で展覧会を開催することで、その経験を形にする事ができました。毎日、他の人たちとの楽しい活動がたくさんありました。私たちは彼らが帰国する時、展覧会のタイトルを「もっと時間をかけて制作したとしたら、何を展示していたでしょう！」にすべきだったと冗談を言いました。このようなレジデンスをもっと増やしていきたいですね。アートを作ることは私たちが大切にしていることですが、この滞在期間中に生まれた人間関係も大切にしています。スタジオTsunagaruの素晴らしいところは、正面のドアが通りに面していることです。通りを行き交う人々は、何が作られているのか興味津々に覗いています。壁のないスタジオは、質問を招き、創造的な経験を共有し、つながりをもたらします。
